try to fix sphinx errors

Description

Recent pull requests seem to fail sphinx. This attempts to fix the issues. I did use GPT 5.6 sol.

Tests

The sphinx CI test should hopefully not given an error any longer.

The test still fails. Is it a different issue?

Yes, @jmduarte needs to update the Dockerfile to a newer version. This may uncover more errors, but we can fix those in this PR.
