Amazing story! Tremulous was one of my favourite game and this game definitely deserves better now. I remember the OG times on X servers, on AA. I met lot of friends there. This game was always so fun and it still is if there are some players online.

Tim, have you ever wondered put this game to Steam, Epic or to other game launchers? This definitely would bring some players to this game and revive this game. Also, there are lot of people on the forum, under Trem youtube videos, on community servers, people would rejoin if there are players, so making changes for this game like as i mentioned put this game to Steam, this game would become a huge successor again.

Anyways, I'd thank you here you made this game back then for us, you made nice memories for us of this game. There are some Tremulous Discord servers which are still active, I send you invite link if you'd join.

Yeah the Steam idea has been bandied around a bit over the years. From memory in the early days of Steam there was some restriction on free/open source content so we didn't go down that route. That's my recollection anyway, it could be faulty. I strongly suspect it's too late to put a 2000s era game on Steam now, but who knows. It has crossed my mind to get it running in a web browser though; might look into that one of these days.

A lot of people wanna this game back to his golden life again, you can find many reddit posts, youtube videos, discord servers where people talking about this game a nostalgic game would be nice. About Steam, just check the OpenTTD game. It was a died game which hosted on debian repo, til they put the game to the Steam. After uploading it got 1000-2000+ players in first few weeks and the game is still played by 500-600 players weekly. I think Tremulous would get as many player as Openttd. Some people from Tremulous community created 1.3 version of the game and its absolutely compatible with modded servers where we usually play, and supports full screen on any display, even compatible with Win10/11, Linux and even MacOS with Apple Sillicon.

I will always be extremely grateful for your work in producing Tremulous. I started playing in late 2006, and by 2008 I was running one of the popular NA servers. Having access to the source code pushed my love affair with programming into overdrive and really helped me get my feet wet :) I can safely say if it wasn't for the work of you and your friends, my life (and career) would have developed along a far different path.

Beautiful story. I've played thousands of games over the years and Tremulous is still easily one of the most special, memorable, and impactful games I have ever played.

Thank you for writing all this down. I was one of the players who joined in 2006 and always wondered why Tremulous development lost its way after 1.1, when it achieved so much in the years before.

My favorite detail is the #xreal channel in your IRC screenshot. It might not be worth much to you, but I still have a few hundred screenshots I took while testing Tremulous in xreal together with Robert Beckebans (who built xreal). The real-time lighting effects had great potential to give the game even more atmosphere ;-)

Really happy to see the story of the game I played exclusively from 2009 to 2017. Was hoping Murnatan or Gloom 2 would pick up but nothing has ever been the same since, especially mods like korX. Not even Natural Selection 2 lasted! Much love from a big fan.

Man many moons ago I remember Trem being one of my first experiences with online gaming. I had so much fun with so many random people. I was too young to even know what IRC was at the time, but much fun was had nonetheless. It would be cool to get back involved with some people from X server on discord. Used to love this game, been tempted to boot it up just because.
